Wasps make their nests from paper, chewing up strips of bark and spitting it out again to form a rough paper; the most common place for wasps to make nests are in basements, sheds or dark, cool places.
The only wasps that survive the winter are the young fertilised queen; they begin to build new nests in the spring and the queen lays up to a dozen eggs, once hatched she feeds them until they become workers.
